L-3 Flight Tests Video Relay with Miniature Common Data Link Terminal
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 24, 2007--L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today the successful flight test of a video relay from a Common Data Link (CDL) compliant, software-programmable terminal weighing one pound. This latest innovation extends the capability of L-3's one pound data link, which was successfully flight tested in July 2007. To date, L-3 has provided over 500 CDL terminals to a variety of manned and unmanned platforms, providing armed forces worldwide with reliable, inter-operable, high capacity communications.
"The ability to simultaneously transmit and receive high bandwidth video data is a requirement for creating networks and routing information in the net-centric warfare age," said Susan Opp, President and General Manager of L-3 Communication Systems-West (L-3 CS-West). "Our Mini-CDL terminal delivers that capability to small, lightweight platforms using dependable, proven technology."
The small, fully ruggedized system, including a digital modem, RF electronics and amplifiers, flew on a U.S. Navy unmanned air system (UAS), and operated at 10.71 Mbps symmetrically (transmit and receive mode) to route and relay full motion video from Webster Field to three different Naval CDL surface terminals located at the Surface/Aviation Interoperability Laboratory (SAIL) at Patuxent River Naval Air Station.
Government representatives at L-3's successful demonstration also witnessed tests demonstrating L-3's commitment to multi-vendor CDL interoperability. The one pound CDL miniature transceiver interoperated with three different Naval CDL surface terminals using the latest CDL Annex B, Revision F formats, all manufactured by different vendors.
