KHOST PROVINCE, Afghanistan (NNS) -- Members of the Khost Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) completed a quality assurance and medical clinic assessment mission in Mando Zayi, a district in Khost in early September.
“We did a medical clinic assessment to determine the capabilities of the clinic in Mando Zayi,” said Ensign Christopher Weis, Khost PRT information operations officer. “We also handed out hygiene products to the people there.”
This was the first time the team had visited this particular clinic, so it was necessary to evaluate the facility and learn about the patients the clinic typically treats.
The Khost PRT, a team of Soldiers and Sailors working out of Forward Operating Base Chapman, also conducted quality assurance inspections on a district center building near the clinic.
“The district center in Mando Zayi is one of six we are conducting quality assurance on,” said Builder 1st Class Michael Komorowski, a Khost PRT building engineer. “I check to make sure the contractors are using the right materials, the walls are straight, and that the overall quality is up to standards.”
An Afghan company is responsible for all of the construction on the district center, and the PRT conducts inspections as frequently as possible to make sure building standards are being maintained.
“What we’re doing in Khost is a great idea,” Komorowski said. “It brings the communities together. And having a clinic next door to the district center is great for these people.”
Buildings are not the only construction sites the Khost PRT visits. A local contractor is also in the process of building a paved road from outside of Salerno to the Pakistan border. The Khost PRT checked that construction as well, making sure the layers and stages of the road are consistent. The goal, according to Weis, is to build a road that will last 60 years or more with very little maintenance.
“This road is one of our longest roads,” Komorowski said. “It’s a much needed road that will open up a lot of commerce for the local communities.”
