NEW ORLEANS (NNS) -- Marines from Marine Air Group (MAG) 42 Detachment Charlie departed Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base, New Orleans on Sept. 1 in support of ongoing efforts in the global war on terrorism (GWOT).
"We're going to be one of the key assets while in Iraq," said Marine Maj. Sander Melvin, maintenance officer. "These deployments are milestones for everyone involved, including the families. I am going to miss my own family but I’m proud to stand here with my fellow Marines. We have a job to do.”
The squadron completed rigorous work-ups earlier this summer.
"We've trained hard and we’re ready to respond to anything," said Melvin. "Iraq is where we put all that training to use."
Nearly 100 Marines of MAG 42 said their goodbyes as they boarded the planes. For some, it was their first deployment away from their families and loved ones, but for more battle-tested Marines, this was seen as routine.
"I've been in country three times and each time more intense than the other. Leaving my wife and kids is all a part of being a Marine," said Marine Staff Sgt. Cory Butts. "Defending this country and winning the global war on terrorism should be the only thing we are thinking about.”
