SANTA RITA, Guam (NNS) -- U.S. Naval Base Guam, Naval Airborne Weapons Maintenance Unit (NAWMU) 1 received the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) award July 23 for meritorious service from January 2005 to May 2006.

The award was signed by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen and was presented to NAWMU-1 Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Roy Harrison, Executive Officer Eddie Gonzalez and Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Scott Murphy, senior enlisted leader.

“It is with my sincere appreciation that I personally commend NAWMU-1 for a job well done,” said Harrison.

This is the sixth time NAWMU-1 has received a MUC for their outstanding performance as a unit.

The award was presented to NAWMU-1 for their ability to consistently execute their assigned mission while providing direct support for the global war on terrorism in the 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet area of responsibilities. During this time they processed nearly 5,800 ammunition assets with zero mishaps.

They were the model command for intermediate and depot level missile maintenance excellence and they ensured combat ready ordnance for the success of combat operations. Their on-site maintenance reduced the cost of repair and kept critical assets in theater, saving the Navy $30 million in maintenance and transportation costs.

NAWMU-1 accomplished a great deal during their off-duty hours spending time volunteering over 10,600 hours. The group built a three bedroom house for a local family and they were the first U.S. Navy command to take on an entire Habitat for Humanity project.

“As a team, NAWMU-1 has developed a genuine interest in accomplishing our mission,” said leading petty officer, Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Arnold Brunson. “It is my greatest pleasure to serve under a command with such devotion, teamwork and camaraderie.”
