SOUDA BAY, Crete (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) made a brief stop in Souda Bay Aug. 20-21 for supplies and refueling.
“We made a port visit for about a day so we could load 100 pallets of supplies,” said Lt. Cmdr. Charles Dunphy, Kearsarge assistant supply officer. “Although we onloaded mostly food items, we also loaded ship’s store items and critical repair parts.”
In addition to supplies, Kearsarge refueled with approximately 750,000 gallons of fuel, which is enough to fill 50,000 midsized automobiles.
The ship’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department set up sporting events such as softball, volleyball and basketball for Sailors and Marines. Each department on the ship formed their own “departmental” teams to see who would be the best of the best.
“I had a great time,” said Machinery Repairman 2nd Class Shawn Beckhorn, of Kearsarge’s Engineering Department, who participated in the softball tournament. “It was nice to build some camaraderie with my shipmates.”
According to Dunphy, the ship’s Supply Department arranged to have vendors on the pier and shuttle buses to take Sailors and Marines to the Navy Exchange and to the recreational activity site. Arrangements were also made to keep one of the base restaurants open until midnight.
“Another thing Sailors and Marines did was visit the Argonaut,” said Kearsarge Command Master Chief (SW) Kenneth Delaruelle. “It’s a place where Sailors could grab some food. It also has self-serve laundry, phone and internet services, as well as a gift shop.”
Overall, the brief stop not only replenished supplies, but also built Navy and Marine Corps teams ready for future taskings.
