EVERETT, Wash. (NNS) -- Naval Station (NAVSTA) Everett held a change of command ceremony on Aug. 10.

Capt. Thomas Mascolo relieved Capt. Eddie Gardiner.
The command welcomed Mascolo to his tenure as NAVSTA Everett commanding officer with a reception at Everett’s Jackson Plaza.

The ceremony opened with the arrival of the official party including Rear Adm. Robert O. Passmore, Vice Commander, Naval Reserve Forces Command/Deputy Commander, Navy Region Northwest, Congressman Rick Larsen and Marysville Mayor Dennis Kendall.

Rear Adm. Michael R. Groothousen, Commander, Navy Region Europe/Commander, Maritime Air Naples, event guest speaker, opened with kind words for Mascolo and his family.

“I am sure you will rise to the challenge set before you in continuing to combine Sailors, civilians and the surrounding supportive community into a well oiled team supporting our ships and crews who deploy around the world,” said Groothousen.

NAVSTA Everett is home to several Navy vessels including USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), USS Momsen (DDG-76) and USS Shoup (DDG-86), as well as two U.S. Coast Guard ships, USCGC Henry Blake (WLM-563) and USCGC Blue Shark (WPB-87360).

“Our mission is to continue to provide the best support possible to the Sailors and their families who call Everett home.” said Mascolo.

Everett Mayor and guest speaker, Ray Stephanson, thanked Gardiner for all he as done for the Sailors and community during his time as commanding officer.

“You have served Naval Station Everett and its people well,” said Stephanson. “We have enjoyed your leadership and acknowledge the professionalism you have brought with you.”

Mascolo graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1982 and has since been on several deployments and flown more than 4,000 hours in 41 aircrafts. He has earned the Steven Prior Patterson Leadership Award, Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Strike Flight Air Medal.

Mascolo said he and his family look forward to the new challenge of serving as commanding officer aboard NAVSTA Everett and extend their many thanks for the warm welcome, they have received from Sailors and the local community.

Gardiner and his family officially retire Oct. 1 after serving in the Navy for 38 years.
