NORFOLK (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) deployed from Naval Station Norfolk Aug. 1 for a regularly scheduled six-month deployment as part of the Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG).
Porter is deploying to conduct Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in support of the ongoing rotation of forward-deployed forces. While deployed, Porter is also expected to take part in maritime security exercises.
“We have no specifics right now, but we will be doing whatever is required of us out there," Hall said.
Various family and support groups helped Porter Sailors and their families prepare for this deployment.
“MWR [Morale, Welfare and Recreation], the Family Readiness Group and the Ombudsmen have all been supportive,” said Lt. Cmdr. Thomas J. Dixon, executive officer of Porter. “They’ve been preparing as long as we have so now our families are just as ready as we are.”
Jamie, the daughter of an officer aboard Porter said, “I’m proud of my Dad. “He helps them bring the Army and Marines where they need to go.”
The amphibious assault ship Kearsarge is flagship for the Kearsarge ESG, which is comprised of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, Amphibious Squadron 8, commanded by Capt. Robert Bougher, the amphibious transport dock USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44), the dock landing ship USS Ponce (LPD 15), the guided-missile frigate USS Carr (FFG 52), Porter, the guided-missile cruiser USS Vicksburg (CG 69), and the nuclear fast-attack submarine USS Miami (SSN 755).
MSO sets the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complements the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons and other material.
