VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- Cmdr. Michael Junge relieved Cmdr. Erik Ross as commanding officer of the dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) Aug. 3, during a ceremony at Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Little Creek.
The guest speaker, Naval Inspector General Command Master Chief Hull Technician (SW/AW) Kathleen Hansen, who served with Ross on USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), praised his character and energy during her speech.
“Captain Ross, you leave the Whidbey Island today a better place than when you arrived,” said Hansen. “We are all better Sailors for having served with such a great leader.”
Ross commented on his time as commanding officer as he addressed his crew for the last time.
“This rollercoaster ride has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life,” said Ross.
Commmander, Amphibious Squadron 2, Capt. Peter Fanta presented Ross with a Meritorious Service Medal for his exemplary performance as Whidbey Island’s commanding officer.
Upon taking command, Junge addressed his crew for the first time.
“To the men and women of Whidbey Island, I look forward to our time together and I dedicate my service to you,” said Junge.
Junge’s previous duty stations include the destroyer USS Moosbrugger (DD 980), the frigate USS Underwood (FFG 36), navigator on amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) and executive officer on the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68).
