
Admiral Buzby visits Samuel B. Roberts

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (NNS) -- Rear Adm. Mark H. Buzby, commander, Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, visited USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) (Sammy B) July 30, for lunch with the officers of the wardroom during a brief stop in Guantanamo Bay while supporting Partnership of the Americas (POA) 2007 deployment in the Caribbean.
While on board, Buzby had the opportunity to talk with serveral "Sammy B" Sailors.
“It was an interesting and unique experience to have the admiral on board. I had the chance to learn a little about what was going on there and it made me very proud of the work our Sailors are doing there,” said Lt. j.g. Nick Taylor.
Buzby provided some inspiring words after lunch, encouraging the officers of the wardroom while emphasizing the importance of Partnership of the Americas and the value of sacrifices the Sailors make.
The admiral’s visit left an impression on many inlcluding Operations Specialist Seaman Apprentice Paul Geater, who served as a food service attendant during the lunch.
“I got to speak to the admiral for a few minutes after lunch. He was very motivating and extremely knowledgeable. He definitely encouraged me to pursue my goals of becoming an officer," said Geater.
Sammy B left Guantanamo Bay shortly after the admiral’s departure to continue on to Curacao, Antilles as the ship and crew carry out their Partnership of the Americas mission. Later in August, Samuel B Roberts will participate in PANAMAX 2007, a multinational maritime exercise organized to facilitate international naval cooperation in defense of the Panama Canal.
Samuel B. Roberts is a unit of POA Task Group 40.0 which consists of dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57), and the staff of Destroyer Squadron 40, commanded by Capt. Randy Snyder.
POA 2007 is a U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command deployment focusing on enhancing relations with partner nations through a variety of exercises and events at sea and on shore throughout South America and the Caribbean.
