From Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast Public Affairs

NEW ORLEANS (NNS) -- The Navy is continuing to make repairs and improvements on Naval Air Station-Joint Reserve Base (NAS-JRB) New Orleans. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a $56.9 million contract July 3 to Broadmoor L.L.C. of Metairie, La., for the design and construction of six projects on the base.

“This is great news for all of us here in New Orleans,” said Lt. Cmdr. Nelson Wells, resident officer in charge of construction at NAS-JRB New Orleans. “These projects will greatly enhance the quality of life for the Sailors and families on this installation and also improve the readiness of critical facilities that support the NAS-JRB New Orleans mission.”

Broadmoor L.L.C. will design and construct a new command and control hardening facility, a crash/fire rescue complex, a public works complex and a youth center, as well as perform hangar renovations, and comprehensive utilities improvements on the installation.

The command and control hardening project is a repair, expansion and hardening of Hurricane Katrina-damaged facilities, to include the consolidation of command and control, base telephone office functions, NMCI functions and their supporting staffs into one facility. This project is scheduled to be completed in July 2008.

The new fire/crash rescue complex consists of two new facilities which will replace the fire station severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Its major features include one 7,000-square-foot facility for airfield crash/rescue mission capabilities on the airfield flight line and a 4,200-square-foot facility for performing the traditional structural fire department mission. This complex will be ready to move in by November 2008.

The public-works complex will replace public works facilities at Naval Support Activity and NAS-JRB that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina, consolidating three structures into one efficient complex at NAS-JRB by November 2008. Four buildings are to be demolished with this project.

The youth center will be an 8,000-square-foot facility including activity and game rooms, a computer room, snack bar and administrative spaces. It should be ready for business by November 2009.

The renovation of Hangar 263 is a complete renovation of the existing structure, to include hardened features designed to protect the building from future hurricane-type events. Work is scheduled for completion in May 2009.

Many of the facilities are ‘hardened’ replacements for ones damaged by Hurricane Katrina, meaning they will be designed to withstand hurricane-type events that may occur in the future.

The utilities project will be a repair and “hurricane proofing” of critical base utility infrastructure systems, including natural gas, water, electrical, waste water and storm water system upgrades. The project will be completed in August 2008.
