SILVERDALE, Wash. (NNS) -- Cmdr. Benjamin Pearson III relieved Cmdr. Jeffery Coran as the commanding officer of the USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) (Gold) in a change of command ceremony at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor Deterrent Park, July 6.

During Coran’s tenure his Sailors achieved multiple awards including the Kentucky’s first Battle Efficiency “E.”

“Clearly, his skill and professionalism were crucial to the many successes of Kentucky Gold,” said Capt. Mark Olson, event guest speaker. “Coran has led the ship on four patrols, an extended refit, numerous highly successful exams, including several exceptionally high scores, a nomination for the Arleigh Burke Trophy for most improved crew, numerous departmental awards and the ships first Battle “E.”

Philip Setters, executive director of the Kentucky Bluegrass Coalition, brought news from Kentucky's House of Representatives. The commonwealth declared July 6 as Cmdr. Jeffery S. Coran Day throughout Kentucky.

“Cmdr. Coran has more than any of his predecessors, worked hard to strengthen the ties between the Commonwealth of Kentucky and her namesake submarine,” said Setters. “Under his command, USS Kentucky has continued to represent the greatest of Kentucky traditions before our nation and the world.”

During Coran’s speech, he recognized a few of his junior crew members, who he felt made him a better commanding officer and the Kentucky a better warship.

Pearson, a Washington native, said it’s great to be back in the Pacific Northwest and he is thrilled to take the command of the Kentucky.

“Our mission has two clear and distinct objectives, which are to reach and maintain the very highest state of readiness and to ensure the personal and professional development of each and every one of you,” said Pearson. “Our readiness to support our nation’s interests is our reason for being. The quality of our people and their remarkable dedication are the keys to our success.”
