NORFOLK (NNS) -- Cmdr. Scott Gray relieved Cmdr. Kenneth W. Caraveo as the commanding officer of the “Bear Aces” of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 124 during a change of command ceremony June 28 at Naval Station Norfolk.

Before turning over command to Gray, Caraveo had a few things to share with his fellow shipmates of VAW-124.

“The bottom line is that you’ve all come together as a team and your accomplishments make me proud to be your commanding officer,” said Caraveo.

Caraveo reported to VAW-124 as executive officer in February 2005 and took command in April 2006.

“Thanks to the Bear Aces for making this the best tour of my career,” said Caraveo.

Caraveo’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award.

He has accumulated more than 3,000 total flight hours.

Gray served in operational assignments with VAW-126, 125 and 113 deploying to the Persian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. He served as flag aide to Commander, 2nd Fleet/Striking Fleet Atlantic and deployed on numerous Joint Task Force exercises including NATO’s Operation Strong Resolve.

Gray has logged more than 400 carrier-arrested landings and 2,200 flight hours in tactical aircraft.

“The Bear Aces have always risen to the challenge and distinguished itself through excellence, innovation and professionalism,” said Gray.

“I’m going to carry this squadron forward from the great baseline that Caraveo has set for us.
