USS DENVER, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Denver (LPD 9) provided medical assistance to a vessel in distress in the Persian Gulf on June 28 while conducting maritime operations in the 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO).

The 12-person Filipino crew of motor vessel Green Vile 2, a Panamanian-flagged merchant vessel, indicated they needed help after a crew member had slipped in the engine room, hit his head and had been unconscious for approximately three hours.

A rescue and assistance (R&A) team boarded the vessel as part of its maritime operations mission to provide assistance to the crew. Medical personnel assessed the crew member and recommended he be transported to Denver for further treatment and evaluation.

Commander Task Group 152.0 Capt. Bradley Martin, who was in tactical command of Denver, requested the ship’s assistance.

"One of our primary missions is to assist fellow mariners at sea who are in distress and request assistance,” said Martin. “When Denver received the distress call, I knew it was the right thing to do. Denver responded quickly to this request and was on scene to provide medical assistance as soon as they could. Our thoughts and prayers are with this sailor and his family."

The injured mariner was transferred to a hospital in Bahrain and is receiving further treatment.

As part of maritime operations, coalition forces have a long-standing tradition of helping mariners in distress by providing medical assistance, engineering assistance and search and rescue efforts.

Maritime operations help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment and complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts in regional nations’ littoral waters. Coalition forces also conduct maritime operations under international maritime conventions to ensure security and safety in international waters so that commercial shipping and fishing can occur safely in the region.

Denver, part of Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group, departed San Diego for a regularly scheduled deployment in support of maritime operations and entered the 5th Fleet AOO on May 19.
