AL ANBAR PROVINCE, Iraq (NNS) -- Delta Company Team 3 of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4 constructed two Modular Protective Billeting (MPB) berthing facilities in the Taway Province of Ramadi on June 14.

The MPBs will provide housing for civilian contractors who train the Iraqi Police Force. These facilities consist of a berthing area and a roof designed to add protection to the berthing area from indirect fire. The living area of each MPB is fully wired for electricity and equipped with air conditioning, and can accommodate up to six residents.

The Seabees who participated in building the MPBs were able to provide critical construction and interact with local Iraqis at the same time.

“I was very impressed with how the troops of Team 3 were always on guard while doing their mission and interacting with the local population without losing their focus,” said Steelworker 1st Class (SCW) Eugene Burston, Team 3 mission commander.

Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (SCW/FMF) Philippe Manrique was on site to provide medical service to the Delta Company crew and also provided daily medical care to local Iraqi civilians. The Iraqi women and children were his main focus. Because they use their hands to cook, they often suffer from cuts and burns and have no way of treating them.

“It felt good to travel outside the base camp and interact with the local population,” said Manrique. “I was able to provide routine medical care to the Iraqi people who normally don’t have access to it.”

During Delta Company's mission, local Iraqi children frequently visited the worksite. The team interacted with the children by playing with them, participating in photos and sharing candy treats. Many Seabees at the job site said the work and the company raised their spirits as well as the local children.

NMCB 4 is part of nearly 1,100 Sailors and Marines supporting critical construction efforts in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq.
