F-22 Raptor Team, Including Pratt & Whitney, Accepts 2006 Collier Trophy
EAST HARTFORD, Conn., June 12, 2007 - The National Aeronautic Association awarded the prestigious 2006 Robert J. Collier Trophy to the F-22 Raptor team at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., Friday. Lockheed Martin accepted the award and was joined on stage by Raptor team members from Pratt & Whitney, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and BAE Systems. Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company, powers the F-22 Raptor with the F119 propulsion system.
“It has been a privilege for Pratt & Whitney to be part of this outstanding team, and to work closely with the Air Force, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and the other contractors in building the most advanced fighter ever,” Steve Finger, president, Pratt & Whitney, told more than 500 industry attendees. “The F119 engine brings stealth technologies, vectored thrust and an exceptional thrust-to-weight ratio to provide the F-22 with unprecedented maneuverability and survivability in combat making the Raptor a quantum leap beyond anything else that flies.”
The team was chosen for excellence in the design, test and operation of the F-22 Raptor throughout its development, testing and manufacturing phases. Special recognition was given to the fighter jet’s 2006 Operation Northern Edge exercises held in Alaska, a performance that affirmed the Raptor as the most reliable, survivable and revolutionary fighter in the world.
Pratt & Whitney is a past recipient of the Collier Trophy for the following programs: Eclipse Aviation’s Eclipse 500 Very Light Jet (VLJ) in 2005; Joint Strike Fighter Program in 2001; Boeing 777 commercial airplane transport in 1995; C-17 Globemaster III in 1994; F-16 Fighter Program in 1975; Boeing 747 introduction into commercial service in 1970; Chance Vought Aircraft for the F-8U Crusader in 1956; the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress in 1955; and United Aircraft Corporation’s production of the J-57 jet engine in 1952.
The Robert J. Collier Trophy was established in 1911 and is administered by the National Aeronautical Association. The award is granted each year for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America demonstrated during the preceding year. The trophy is permanently housed at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
