From Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron 5 Public Affairs

U.S. Central Command Area of Operations (NNS) -- Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron (NCWRON) 5, homeported in Imperial Beach, Calif., relieved Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron 34 on May 12 as the first active-duty NCW squadron in the U.S. Central Command area of operations.

The officers and crew of both squadrons stood by in the more than 100-degree heat as the pennants were changed and NCWRON 5 officially took the watch from NCWRON 34 after their nearly nine-month deployment.

During the ceremony, Cmdr. Joseph E. Bell, commanding officer of NCWRON 5, also relieved Capt. Gary Almeida, commodore of NCWRON 34, as commander of Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron Forward and Task Group 56.5 -- representing all coastal warfare assets in the Persian Gulf region.

NCWRON 34 provided harbor security and port defense for critical junctions in the supply line for the global war on terrorism. Their execution of waterside and landward force protection ensured the uninterrupted flow of supplies to units all over the Middle East.

Following the ceremony Sailors from both units shook hands, offering final advice on turnover and words of encouragement.

”We’ve been preparing for this deployment for a long time. Now that we’re here, we’re ready to roll,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Earl Fejarang.

His sentiments were echoed throughout NCWRON 5 as personnel took up the watch in the boats, at security check points and operations centers.

Naval Coastal Warfare is part of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, a global force provider of adaptive force packages of expeditionary capabilities to joint warfighting commanders. NECC serves as a single functional command to centrally manage the current and future readiness, resources, manning, training, and equipping of the Navy Expeditionary Force.
