RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (NNS) -- USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) participated in community relations projects May 28-31 during a port visit in Rio de Janeiro in support of Partnership of the Americas (POA) 2007 deployment.
In conjunction with a port visit to conduct theater security cooperation military-to-military engagements with the Brazilian Navy, Samuel B. Roberts’ crew members spent two days working at Peoples Central Institute, a community day care center with a variety of activities and services for children from ages 3 months to 12 years old.
Over the course of the project, Sailors did several renovation and painting tasks to help restore the aging facilities of the institute. A wall was taken down in order to expand a classroom and accommodate more students. The volunteers painted on and around the grounds, and the outside walls of the schoolhouse, as well as colorful painting leading up to the playground.
Roberts’ Sailors also donated soccer balls, nets, and jerseys for the kids to play “parlor soccer,” which is soccer played on a concrete basketball court. Sailors played against the children in a scrimmage game, an experience all agreed was one of the most enjoyable parts of the day.
Operations Specialist 3rd Class Kristopher Kennedy commented on the impact of the project.
“There is a real sense of accomplishment when you help anyone. When you see children so happy and full of life, it really puts things into perspective. Life is what you make of it,” said Kennedy.
Guided missile frigate Samuel B. Roberts, homeported in Mayport, Fla., is deployed in support of POA 2007 along with amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), guided missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57), and Chilean frigate CS Almirante Latorre (FFG 14) under the leadership of Capt. Randy Snyder, Commander Destroyer Squadron 40.
POA 2007 focuses on enhancing relationships with regional partner nations through a variety of exercises and events at sea and ashore throughout South America and the Caribbean.
