NORFOLK (NNS) -- Cmdr. Dan W. Brune relieved Cmdr. Grady Banister as the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 26 during a ceremony June 7 at Naval Station Norfolk.
“As commanding officer Cmdr. Banister was committed to ensuring that his people were well trained to carry out the mission and meet every call,” said Rear Adm. D.C. Curtis, Commander, Naval Surfaces Forces Atlantic, and guest speaker.
Banister, a native of Griffin, Ga., took command of HSC-26 March 10, 2006.
“I never turned a wrench, never jumped in the sea to rescue anyone, never serviced an aircraft, never typed in instruction, never fired a weapon, you did it all,” said Banister, addressing his crew for the last time as commanding officer. “I was just lucky enough to be a part of it and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Brune graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1989 and received a bachelor's of science in general engineering. After completing flight training in Pensacola, Fla., he was designated a naval aviator in January 1991. Prior to assuming command of HSC-26, Brune served as the squadron’s executive officer.
“To the men and women in ranks, you are Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 26,” said Brune. “You are the ones that do everything to make this place go.”
Banister’s next orders will send him to Headquarters European Command in Stuttgart, Germany.
