NORFOLK (NNS) -- Command of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 8 changed hands June 7 as Rear Adm. Philip H. Cullom relieved Rear Adm. Allen G. Myers in a change of office ceremony pierside aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69).

“I am honored to take command of Carrier Strike Group 8 and the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group,” said Cullom. “I am impressed by the strike group’s accomplishments and look forward to working with the exceptional men and women who make it all happen.

"It is our Sailors and their families who support them back home that are the true strength of any strike group and what makes these fighting forces such important contributors to our national defense.”

Cullom was most recently assigned as the director for strategy and policy (N5SP), Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington.

Myers who has served as commander, CSG-8 and Eisenhower CSG since July 2005, will be assigned as director, Air Warfare Division (N88), Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

Myers led the Eisenhower CSG in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations during an extended, regularly scheduled deployment in support of maritime operations and Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom from October to May.

Cullom and his staff are embarked aboard the Eisenhower, the flagship for the Eisenhower CSG. As commander CSG-8, Cullom leads the guided-missile cruisers USS Anzio (CG 68) and USS Vella Gulf (CG 72), and ships assigned to Destroyer Squadron 28.
