Nepal probe commission absolves King Gyanendra of all charges

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New Delhi, June 6,IRNA -- In a major reprieve to Nepal King Gyanendra, a high-level government-appointed probe commission has absolved him of all charges in connection with the suppression of the popular pro-democracy movement last year.

The report of the commission, formed to punish the culprits behind the crackdown on the People's Movement 2006, "has clearly mentioned that as the King had cooperated with the political parties to reinstate the Parliament and to restore democracy, it was not necessary to take action against him," Gopalman Shrestha, former minister and Vice President of Nepali Congress (Democratic), told PTI.

Shrestha's remarks come at a time when the lawmakers in the Interim Parliament have been demanding action against all the culprits, including the King.

The government has not yet made public the report of the commission headed by former Supreme Court judge Krishna Jung Raymajhi.

Shrestha, also member of a ministerial committee to recommend specific action against those listed in the probe commission's report, charged Raymajhi for making public statement demanding action against the King on the basis of the report, which has in fact absolved the monarch of all charges.

The report has recommended action against over 200 officials, including royal ministers and security chiefs for their role in suppressing the agitation in which 25 people were killed.
