AVALON, Australia (NNS) -- Three F/A-18E/F Super Hornets from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5 participated in the 2007 Australian International Aerospace and Defense Exposition in Avalon, March 16-24.

Two of the Super Hornets were from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 102; the other was from VFA-27. Both squadrons operate from Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan.

The air show also featured the U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F-111s in the exposition’s air shows and demonstrations.

Australian Minister of Defense Brendan Nelson and RAAF Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Geoffrey Shepherd rode in the Super Hornets during the air show.

The Australian government recently announced their intentions to purchase 24 Super Hornets as replacements for the F-111, which began service in 1973.

“This was the first opportunity for the [Australian] military and general public to see the [Super Hornets],” said Air Wing Commander Capt. Michael McNellis.

While the Super Hornets were flying air shows for the public, six other air wing aircraft were training with the RAAF in a joint exercise at Darwin, Australia. McNellis said the exercise provided extensive training for both his air wing and the Australian joint-terminal attack controllers on the ground.
