USS ESSEX, At Sea (NNS) -- Multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) with a crew of more than 1,000 Sailors departed Sasebo, Japan, for Exercise Talisman Saber 07 (TS07) May 21.

Essex is joined by two other Essex Amphibious Readiness Group (Essex ARG) ships, amphibious dock transport USS Tortuga (LSD 46) and amphibious transport dock USS Juneau (LPD 10).

TS07 is a U. S. Pacific Command directed bilateral command post and field training exercise between Australian and U.S. forces. Essex will participate in the fleet exercise scheduled for June primarily in Australia that will include U.S. and Australian Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine and special operations forces.

"Talisman Saber is a varsity level experience," said Capt. Brian T. Donegan, Essex commanding officer. “A joint U.S. force will transit thousands of miles, integrate into a combined task force with one of our closest regional partners, conduct sustained operations at sea then execute challenging missions ashore."

TS07 is designed to maintain a high level of interoperability between U.S. and Australian forces, demonstrating the U.S. and Australian commitment to our military alliance and to regional security. The exercise also supports increased flexibility and readiness, which are force multipliers in winning the global war on terrorism.

During the exercise, Essex will focus on crisis action planning and execution of contingency response operations. TS07 will also provide Essex with the opportunity to practice working in a combined and joint environment, test interoperability and refine procedures and doctrine.

“I’m looking forward to meeting and communicating with my Australian counterparts to see how well we work together,” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 2nd Class (SW) Sullivan Randall.

This is the second time Talisman Saber has been conducted. Talisman Saber combines the two former exercises Tandem Thrust and Crocodile into one biennial, joint, combined exercise with U.S. and Australian forces.

Essex is the only forward-deployed amphibious assault ship and serves Task Force 76, the Navy’s only forward-deployed amphibious force. Task Force 76 is headquartered at White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan, with an operating detachment in Sasebo, Japan.
