ABOARD USS WASP (NNS) -- The multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS WASP (LHD 1) pulled into New York on May 23 to take part in Fleet Week New York City 2007, the weeklong celebration honoring the sea services.

Sailors, Marines and many of Wasp’s civilian guests manned the rails as she steamed through the channel into Manhattan. Wasp completed the line of eight naval vessels sailing down the Hudson River for New York citizens as the “parade of ships.”

Wasp Command Master Chief Michael Conran said this port visit would be a very positive experience for the Sailors and Marines, as well as the citizens of New York.

“I hope the service members have an opportunity to meet the general public face-to-face, so they can show exactly how proud they are to be wearing the uniform.”

Conran believes this trip will raise pride of the Sailors and Marines.

“To me, [meeting the public in uniform] gives us a perspective of why we do this and who we are defending, which makes it all the more worthwhile,” he said.

World-famous musician and founder of Parliament Funkadelic, George Clinton visited the ship as she entered New York Harbor.

Clinton said the experience was "...just overwhelming. It was great feeling because it seems a lot of the people I met know me and it’s nice to know that I could bring a smile to their face through my music."

The military liaison for recruitment section for the New York Police Department, James Browning, hopes the service members see that New Yorkers support the troops.

“Year after year, New York looks forward to Fleet Week and welcoming the Sailors and Marines,” said Browning. "I am certain New York will show them the friendship and the good citizens. We will take care of them while they’re here.”
