Northrop Grumman Sells Indra License for Non-U.S. Sales of ASR-12 Air Traffic Control Radar System
BALTIMORE, May 14, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Indra, a leading Spanish defense and information technology company, has signed a licensing agreement with Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), obtaining rights to manufacture and market Northrop Grumman's ASR-12 air traffic control radar system outside the United States.
The ASR-12 radar, designed and produced by Northrop Grumman's Baltimore-based Electronic Systems sector, is the most modern version of the company's ASR-9 radar. Both versions are used by air traffic controllers to monitor the approach, landing and departure of aircraft. The ASR-9 radar system is currently operating around-the-clock at 135 U.S. airports in addition to 18 airports in other nations. The solid-state ASR-12 radar is currently operational in six nations worldwide.
"This agreement signifies Indra's entry into the air traffic management primary surveillance radar market, reinforcing its position in this line of business," said Jesus Santos, Indra's surveillance director of Air Traffic Management Europe. "The ASR-12 complements our current integral offerings in the Air Traffic Management (ATM) market and extends value to air traffic authorities and suppliers by affording an opportunity for additional integration and greater national development."
Indra's air traffic management systems are currently fielded in 40 countries.
"This commercial airport radar licensing agreement represents a 'win-win' for both companies," said Thomas J. Chrzanowski, director of Air Traffic Management at Northrop Grumman. "Indra is superbly positioned to take an outstanding, proven air traffic control radar system and make it even more attractive in world markets with its own technology and manufacturing enhancements. Northrop Grumman stands to benefit from these product improvements with regard to potential radar system sales or upgrades in the U.S air traffic control market."
