New BAE Systems Memorandum of Understanding for DEPRO(GVB)
11 Apr 2007 | Ref. 105/2007
Ottawa, Canada. - BAE Systems and Depro, St-Laurent Canada, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering discussions around the repair and overhaul of the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) M777 howitzers.
John Kelly, BAE Systems' director of indirect fire and export sales comments: "Depro is already the DND's partner of choice for Howitzer repair and overhaul, so it makes sense for BAE Systems to work with them on future repair requirements on the Canadian M777."
Ron Braun, chief executive officer of Depro added that he welcomes the M777 initiative as it compliments Depro's current and planned repair and overhaul activity on the Canadian Force's (CF) LG1 and C3 Howitzers. "This MoU will not only help us support the work of the Canadian Armed Forces using the skills and expertise of Canadian engineers, but will also bring us one step closer to achieving our aim of becoming the repair and overhaul centre for its combined howitzer fleet," Braun said.
The M777 Howitzer is a 155mm calibre towed howitzer, made predominantly of titanium that weighs less than 5000kg. It can launch a 50kg artillery shell up to 40km in range. Its light weight allows flexible and rapid transportation both by air and road.
BAE Systems has orders for more than 600 M777 Howitzers from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Canadian Army. Canadian M777s are currently deployed in support of Canadian and coalition troops in Afghanistan and is proving an effective deterrent against Taliban forces.
BAE Systems has been developing a partnership with Canadian industry and the country's armed forces for a number of years. Its Hawk advanced jet training system has been delivering fast jet training to NATO pilots at the Saskatchewan based NATO Flight Training Canada programme. The Company also has a range of land systems in service with the Canadian Armed Forces including RG31 mine protected vehicle, M113 armoured personnel carriers and BV206 armoured vehicles.
