Reserves Offering Two-Year Deferment on Deployment

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- The Navy Reserve is offering a two-year deferment from involuntary mobilization to Sailors who join the Reserve Component within six months after release from active duty.

Additionally, Sailors who join the Reserves seven to 12 months after leaving active duty are eligible for a one-year deferment.

According to NAVADMIN 007/07, these deferment dates start the day the Sailor joins the Navy Reserve, regardless of previous active duty obligations or deployment schedule.

“When Sailors transition to the Reserve Component as part of their continuum of service, it is important they receive fair treatment,” said Cmdr. Matt Berda, branch head for mobilization, plans and policies at the Office of the Chief of Navy Reserve.

“This permits a reasonable transition period and avoids back-to-back deployments or mobilizations to the maximum extent possible," Berda added.

As one of several initiatives designed to encourage those leaving active duty to consider continuing service in the Navy Reserve, Navy Recruiting Command is piloting a Fleet to NOSC (Navy Operational Support Center) Program, which is designed to streamline the affiliation process.

“We’re looking to make the transition from active duty to the Reserves more like an off-ramp or an on-ramp,” said Capt. Ray Wynne, director of operations at Recruiting Command. “The more we make the process like transferring between commands, the easier it will be to convince Sailors to continue their service in the Navy Reserves.”

The program is currently being tested at 10 commands including USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75).

Navy veterans, or NAVETS, are being offered several other benefits for joining the Navy’s Reserve. Anyone who has been out of the service for less than four years can reenlist in the Navy Reserve and maintain their current pay grade.

NAVETS may be eligible for up to a $20,000 lump-sum bonus if they affiliate with the Navy Reserve for six years. Officers in selected designators that affiliate with the Navy Reserve are also eligible for up to a $10,000 lump-sum bonus for a three-year obligation.

Other benefits of reserve affiliation include choosing a preferred drilling location close to home, continuing education benefits, continuing Service Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage and maintaining access to the Navy Exchange, Commissary and MWR facilities.
