USS ASHLAND, At Sea (NNS) -- Cmdr. Jeffrey A. Ward relieved Cmdr. David A. Owen as Commanding Officer of USS Ashland (LSD 48) during a ceremony Feb. 25 on board the amphibious dock landing ship.

Owen will report to Commander Carrier Strike Group 8, currently embarked aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), and will serve as surface operations officer.

Ward’s previous assignment was at Naval Personnel Command, Millington, Tenn.

At sea, Ward served aboard USS Roanoke (AOR 7), USS England (CG 22), USS Supply (AOE 6), USS Austin (LPD 4), and USS LaSalle (AGF 3).

Subsequent tours included Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington; Amphibious Group 2, and time at Surface Warfare Officers School, Newport, R.I.

Ward received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at Boston University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He later attended the Naval War College, earning a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies.

Ward said he was proud to assume command.

“I consider it a great honor to serve as the 10th officer to command USS Ashland,” Ward said. “The superb skill and dedication of her crew make Ashland a great ship, and I am proud to have the opportunity to lead such an outstanding group of Sailors. Ashland and her crew have always, and will continue to, serve our great nation with honor, courage, and commitment.”
