GALVESTON, Texas (NNS) -- USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) concluded its port visit to Galveston on Feb. 21, concluding a successful port visit as part of that city’s Navy Week.
Sailors from the Little Creek, Va., dock landing ship took part in a mayoral proclamation for Galveston Navy Week, and participated in a number of community activities, including a “Caps for Kids” visit at Shriners Children’s Hospital, a tour of NASA facilities, a visit to Satori Elementary School visit, and the Knights of Momus Fat Tuesday Parade.
“Navy Week in Galveston was a great success,” said Rear Adm. James A. Symonds, director of Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Readiness Division (N45). “Our goal is to go where we don't have a normal presence and show the people what the Navy is about. The USS Carter Hall represented the Navy in outstanding fashion, from a great looking ship to highly motivated Sailors.
Symonds led the Knights of Momus parade as the grand marshal with a procession of colorful floats, marching bands, costumed parade participants, and formations of Navy Sailors from Seawall Boulevard through the island and ending at Historic Strand.
New Orleans Navy Band “Express” performed at multiple venues during the Navy Week including the morning show at Fox News Studio and parades in downtown Galveston, drawing a large enthusiastic crowd during their top 40 performances.
“The Navy Band from New Orleans (were) great performers who excited all their listeners,” Symonds said. “I was proud to be a part of this small Navy contingent in Galveston, and I'm sure we made a lot of new friends and admirers there.”
Galveston Navy Week is one of 26 Navy weeks planned across America in 2007. Navy weeks are designed to show Americans the investment they have made in their Navy and increase awareness in cities which do not have a significant everyday Navy presence.
