USS BOXER, At Sea (NNS) -- Capt. Peter K. Dallman relieved Capt. David S. Angood as Commander, Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 5 during a change of command ceremony aboard USS Boxer’s (LHD-4) Feb. 14.
In his farewell speech, Angood said it was the highlight of his career being PHIBRON 5’s commander and commanding Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group (BOXESG) through its Western Pacific deployment.
“I can’t think of a better way to finish more than 27 years of naval service than as commander of PHIBRON 5,” said Angood. “We never could have accomplished all that we have without the hard work and dedication of the entire staff.”
Angood assumed command of PHIBRON 5 in December of 2004. Under his leadership, PHIBRON 5 participated in joint and multinational exercises in the Western Pacific, including exercise Malabar ’06, which was the first time that an amphibious strike group participated in the exercise. The success of Malabar helped strengthen international ties between American, Canadian and Indian forces.
“Capt. Angood is a man I admire and respect,” said Lt. Cmdr. Todd Perry, PHIBRON 5’s chief staff officer. “His wealth of experience and keen tactical mind will be sorely missed.”
Captain Dallman, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1984. He comes to PHIBRON 5 after serving as Pacific Fleet Branch Head and Deputy Director for the Chief of Naval Operation’s think tank, “Deep Blue”.
“It’s an honor to relieve such a mentor and a friend,” said Dallman. “I’m glad I get to take over such a dedicated crew, which reflects the hard work that Capt. Angood put in.”
Dallman’s tours of duty include USS John Moore (FFG 19), USS Chosin (CG 65), USS Oldendorf (972), Destroyer Squadron 5, Commanding Officer of USS Cardinal (MHC 60) and USS Cushing (DD 985), and as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff of Operations in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
After the ceremony a small reception was held in the ship’s wardroom where staff said their good-byes to Angood. Immediately following the reception, Angood departed the ship by helicopter.
BOXESG is currently conducting maritime security operations(MSO) in support of U.S. 5th Fleet. MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.
Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/Commander U.S. 5th Fleet’s area of responsibility encompasses about 7.5 million square miles and includes the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean. This expanse, comprised of 27 countries, includes three critical chokepoints at the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal and the Strait of Bab al Mandeb at the southern tip of Yemen.
