GALVESTON, Texas (NNS) -- USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) arrived in Galveston, Texas on Feb. 15, to take part in the Galveston Navy Week festivities.
Homeported at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Va., Carter Hall is making its first port visit as a special guest for the Galveston Navy Week, being held in conjunction with Mardi Gras from February 14-20.
David Moss, a Galveston resident and father to Yeoman Seaman Derek Moss, Carter Hall crewmember, said he thought the Carter Hall's arrival means a lot to the area residents.
"For the majority, people are very patriotic and care about our military and what our young men and woman give to our country," said Moss. "I think it just adds a lot of excitement because you don’t get this on a daily basis. People don’t get to see our ships very often unless you are on the East Coast a lot. It just brings a lot of pride in our country and what it means to us.”
As the ship came to moor, awestruck crowds gathered along the pier, some gazing for their first time at the enormous Navy vessel.
“I was walking around taking in the sights when I spotted the ship coming in,” said Ray Thomas, a Kansas businessman visiting Galveston for a two-week vacation. “This is so interesting especially for someone like me. Growing up in the Midwest the only water you have is a river, creek or pond so you don’t see this kind of thing ever. This is really good.”
Ship visits are a big part of increasing Navy awareness and showcasing opportunities and capabilities of the Navy. Sailors from the Carter Hall, will participate in several local Navy Week events to include a Caps for Kid’s visit, marching in two Mardi Gras parades and attending a Houston Aeros hockey game as special guests.
Galveston Navy Week is one of 26 Navy weeks planned across America in 2007. Navy weeks are designed to show Americans the investment they have made in their Navy and increase awareness in cities which do not have a significant everyday Navy presence.
