SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Commanding officers, executive officers and senior enlisted from approximately 15 units affiliated with Navy Coastal Warfare Group (NCWGRU) 1 met Feb. 9-11 at a conference held aboard Naval Base Coronado to review past accomplishments, highlight current needs and outline future goals.
NCWGRU1 has been the operational commander for four naval coastal warfare squadrons, 11 mobile inshore undersea warfare units, seven inshore boat units, and two mobile security squadrons (MSS) located throughout the western United States and Guam.
The briefing provided an overview on how the new Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) will realign expeditionary units such as NCWGRU1 and also allowed expeditionary warriors to get command-wide updates and learn of operational objectives to implement in the coming year.
"This annual conference -- attended by both active and Reserve Navy Expeditionary Combat Command leaders from commands located west of the Mississippi River -- provided information on everything that affects how we do business," said Lt. Paul Cassutti, of NCWGRU1.
"We talked about logistics, policy and proceedures, and provided a consistent message to posture ourselves for the rest of the year," said Capt. John Sturges, commodore of NCWGRU1.
As of Jan. 2006, NCWGRU1 is part of the new NECC, comprised of integrated active-duty and Reserve Sailors. In the coming year, NECC will continue to realign current Navy expeditionary forces to increase its capacity for maritime security missions, improve effectiveness, and help relieve stress on joint forces deployed around the globe.
"The most important thing in the coming year will be the transition to a maritime expeditionary security force," Sturges said.
The maritime expeditionary security force (MESF) will consist of realigned Naval Coastal Warfare squadrons. Other units organized under the NECC include the Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center, The Expeditionary Training Command, Maritime Civil Affairs Group, Naval Coastal Warfare, Naval Construction Force (Seabees), Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group, Riverine Force, and Combat Camera Atlantic.
"This is the newest command in the Navy," said Command Master Chief Elmer Rodriguez of Naval Coast Warfare Squadron 30. "NECC is what the new warfare is all about. It is the tip of the spear in my book."
