NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer criticized the inadequate cooperation between NATO and the European Union, DPA reported.
"There remains a strange distance," the NATO head said during a conference on European security and defense in Berlin.
There are unfortunately "too many sceptics" who are intentionally keeping the EU and NATO on a distance because they are afraid of too much US influence, according to de Hoop Scheffer.
Germany's Foreign Ministry is hosting a two-day European security and defense conference which is assessing the latest developments of the European security and defense policy and providing an outlook on Europe's future security and military strategy.
The high-level meeting was opened by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, NATO's de Hoop Scheffer and the EU's High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.
Representatives from EU organizations and institutions linked to EU member states as well as security and defense experts from European think-tanks and universities will take part in the discussions.
