NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- More than 200 Sailors aboard the guided missile frigate USS Hawes (FFG 53) departed their homeport in Norfolk Jan. 27, for a six-month deployment to the U.S. European Command and Central Command areas of operation.

Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Chuck Marks said the ship will conduct maritime security operations (MSO) in the Horn of Africa and Middle East regions.

"We have been focusing on this for the last 14 months," he said adding that the crew is ready for deployment.

USS Hawes will enhance naval presence for combatant commanders in support of ongoing MSO.

This "surge" deployment was scheduled in early 2006 and is designed to be flexible and support joint and allied forces afloat and ashore.
