EVERETT, Wash. (NNS) -- Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) Detachment, Everett brought together various resources to complete work on USS Shoup (DDG 86) gas turbine intakes as part of scheduled maintenance during the ships restricted availability (SRA), Jan. 16.
“We started mapping the job, Dec. 16, even before the SRA started,” said Hull Maintenance Technician 2nd Class (SW/AW) Jason Trail. “We finished well ahead of schedule thanks to a lot of hard work.”
Trail said safety and training briefs were given to prepare the Sailors for potential dangers, and what to expect.
”They picked up on what we had to do and got [to work],” said Trail.
IMF took part in the removal of 8,000 square feet of corroded perforated stainless steel plates to be replaced at a later date.
In order to complete the job in a more timely manor, IMF utilized manpower from not only rated Hull Maintenance Technician (HT) shops that would normally handle this type of work, but also Sailors rated for other jobs in the Navy, including Gas Turbine System Technicians, Machinery Repairmen, Boatswain’s Mates, and Fire Controlmen.
“We pulled more than 30 Sailors from other divisions to work with us,” said Hull Maintenance Technician 1st Class (SW) Hank Terford. “It took us three shifts, with 15 Sailors in each, five and a half days to complete the job.”
“Planning, leadership and good communication were key factors in the success of this job,” added Terford. “Without all these things, we could not have come together as a team and accomplished what we did in that amount of time.”
Some non-HT-rated Sailors were pleased with how they thought the work went, and were glad to be given the opportunity for some hands on training.
“I think we did a pretty good job,” said Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Farmer Nathaniel. “The job went smoothly, especially due to having [the] manpower for the job. It was also nice to get some training, because my rate will soon merge with the HT’s.”
