BILOXI, Miss. (NNS) -- A team of Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133 dedicated a brand new fishing pier Jan. 10 for veterans under care at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) medical center here.
The original pier constructed by the VA stood for 15 years until Hurricane Katrina destroyed the structure in Aug. 2005, leaving only the original pilings standing.
Charles Sepich, director of the Biloxi VA Medical Center, said, “The Seabees were here for us first when we needed them.”
While pier projects often are handled by Amphibious Construction Battalions (ACB), Builder 1st Class (SCW) Michael Cadoret, the project supervisor, knew his team was equipped with the necessary skills to complete the project in a safe and timely manner.
“With our motivated Air Detachment crew and 'Can Do' spirit, we got the job done," said Cadoret. “Now the veterans will have a place to fish. They haven’t had that for a long time.”
Gulfport Seabees previously supported the VA by constructing basketball courts, serving as volunteer drivers for patients without transportation and helping during the annual Mardi Gras celebration.
These efforts help Gulfport Seabees remain in touch with their local military service legacy, and give current active duty members a better appreciation for the history and sacrifices of those veterans who participated in past conflicts.
“Just to have today’s active duty members serve those who have already served is a real treat,” said Edward Cassel, spokesman for the Biloxi VA Medical Center.
The bait shop at the new VA fishing pier should open within the month, and in return for their work, the Seabees have been invited to attend one of the upcoming medical center fish fries this season.
