India, Russia to boost military cooperation

The 6th Meeting of the Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC) headed by the Defence Ministers of India and Russia will be held here on January 24, 2007.

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister S B Ivanov, who will be co-chairing the commission meeting with the Defence Minister A K Antony, will be on a five-day visit to India from January 22-26, 2007, said an official release issued here Friday.

The Commission in its deliberations covers areas like interaction between the two Armed Forces, Military Technical Cooperation, Supply of Defence Systems, Equipment upgradation, Licensed and Joint Production and Joint Development and Production.

The three services of Indian Armed Forces use equipment of the Russian origin like MiG and Sukhoi aircraft, submarines and Marine Stealth Frigates by the Indian Navy, ammunition and tanks of the Indian Army.

India and Russia share a time-tested Defence and Strategic Relationship.

In continuity of this relationship and with a view to progress the relationship, the IRIGC-MTC was established in the year 2000.

In the first leg of his visit, Ivanov will arrive in Bangalore on January 22, 2007.

In Bangalore, he will visit defence establishments including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and have meetings with captains of Civil and Defence industries.

He would also be interacting with IT professionals.

Ivanov will join the delegation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is the Chief Guest of the Republic Day Celebrations this year.
