CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- Brig. Gen. Edward Cardon, assistant division commander (support) of the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, visited Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 3 at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado Jan. 16, to get a brief on the unit's capabilities and meet key leaders.
“Mobile Unit Three is going to be part of our task force when we go back to Iraq," said Cardon. "I came down to welcome them to our team."
By combining the talents of the services, Cardon expects the result to be greater than the sum of its parts.
“The Navy’s EOD has incredible capabilities,” said Cardon. “We are looking forward to taking advantage of their capabilities to help save the lives of many of our soldiers.”
Members of EODMU 3 also see the benefits of coordinating the efforts among the services.
“It is important to have a good working relationship with the Army,” said Lt. Andrew Pajak. “We are all one service doing one mission, and a good working relationship is critical to the success of the team and keeping guys alive.”
“Any kind of meet and greet or show of faces is always a good thing,” said Explosive Ordnance Disposal 1st Class (FMF) Chris Romero. “Both services are different in ways and having the general come today shows us that the Army actively wants to know more about the Navy, and the tools and assets we can offer to them.”
EODMU 3 is part of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC), which works as the Navy's expeditionary central management for the readiness, manning, training and equipping of expeditionary Sailors.
NECC integrates all warfighting requirements for expeditionary combat and combat support elements. This transformation allows for standardized training, manning and equipping of Sailors who will participate in the global war on terrorism as part of the joint force. It also results in more capable, responsive and effective expeditionary Sailors.
