HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command of Redstone Arsenal, Ala., has awarded General Dynamics C4 Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), $12.2 million in contract modifications for the Tactical Airspace Integration System (TAIS) follow-on contract. Originally awarded March 2006, the TAIS contract has a total potential value of $87.8 million if all options are exercised.

The TAIS system provides Army commanders with advanced 3-D visualization and situational awareness of the air and ground battlespace, enabling them to “see” a computer-generated representation of aircraft in relation to one another and the battlespace. Each TAIS system is mounted in a rigid-wall shelter on a HMMWV and is fully self-contained. Each shelter receives the air picture through several communication links with military sensor systems. TAIS also provides the ability to de-conflict airspace and avoid fratricide.

Under the recent awards, General Dynamics is providing engineering services to the Army to upgrade TAIS to the Windows® software platform, and is providing engineering support at the Army’s central technical support facility in Ft. Hood, Tex. The contract modification also calls for implementation of a new “visualizer” that will improve the system’s response time when enabling 3-D graphics.

General Dynamics also received awards to integrate three additional TAIS shelters and provide spare equipment. The company has integrated 50 TAIS systems in Huntsville, Ala., under the current contract and has options to integrate up to 30 additional systems by March 2011.

General Dynamics C4 Systems is a leading integrator of secure communication and information systems and technology. With more than 11,000 employees worldwide, the company specializes in command and control, communications networking, computing and information assurance for defense, government and select commercial customers in the United States and abroad.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Va., employs approximately 81,100 people worldwide, and expects 2006 revenues of approximately $24 billion. The company is a market leader in mission-critical information systems and technologies; land and expeditionary combat systems, armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and business aviation.
