USS BOXER, At Sea (NNS) -- For the first time, Boxer incorporated U.S. Army and civilian law enforcement technology into weapons training Dec. 12.
Boxer continually upgrades training methods to match the evolving threats faced when conducting Maritime Security Operations (MSO).
The training incorporated the first use of the AY04 “flash bang” round aboard Boxer. In the past, the “flash bang” was primarily used by Army and civilian law enforcement. It is a shotgun-fired cartridge which produces a loud noise and a blinding flash to stun an enemy. Boxer added the “flash bang” as a new, non-lethal way to stop attackers.
“We have a need to constantly upgrade our weapons,” said Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman (AW/SW/FMF) Gary E. Church Jr. “Given the proven record of the flash bang in the Army, it’s a welcome addition aboard Boxer.”
Weapons’ training at sea typically focuses on proficiency tests with handguns and shotguns. Training with grenades and flares teaches Sailors new ways to defend the ship against small boat and swimmer attacks. The weapons are used to deter, stun or disable attackers approaching Boxer or coalition ships.
“We held this training to familiarize ourselves with different types of ordnance,” said Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class (SCW) Jose Castaneda. “Our goal is to be prepared to defend the ship in the event of an attack.”
Incorporating explosives and flares into training keeps Boxer Sailors sharp and ready to defend the ship against attack. Boxer’s Weapons Department is planning future training with these weapons to familiarize additional sentries.
“These weapons enable us to support MSO,” said Church. “Our Sailors are quick learners, so the more we train, the better we perform.”
Boxer is the flagship for Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group (BOXESG) which is currently conducting maritime security operations in support of U.S. 5th Fleet. MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.
Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/Commander U.S. 5th Fleet’s area of responsibility encompasses about 7.5 million square miles and includes the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean. This expanse, comprised of 27 countries, includes three critical chokepoints at the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal and the Strait of Bab al Mandeb at the southern tip of Yemen.
