15 Iraqis Die in Separate Attacks in Baghdad

16 November 2006

Iraqi police say at least 15 people were killed in separate attacks in Baghdad Thursday.

In the deadliest incident, nine people were killed and two others wounded when gunmen opened fire on a bakery in a religiously mixed district, Zayouna, of eastern Baghdad. Six people, including two policemen, were killed in other attacks around the Iraqi capital.

Hundreds of people have been killed in sectarian violence and insurgent attacks in Baghdad in recent weeks as U.S. and Iraqi forces struggle to stem the bloodshed.

Meanwhile, a spokesman, Basil al-Khatib, for Iraq's Higher Education Ministry says kidnappers who seized scores of people from a government building in Baghdad Tuesday have tortured and killed some of their hostages.

The spokesman cited testimony from several of the 70 hostages who were freed over the past two days.

The exact number of people kidnapped is not known. And, Shi'ite militiamen are suspected to have carried out the mass abduction.

Separately, the U.S. military says coalition forces killed nine suspected terrorists and detained nine others during a raid, Thursday, near the town of Yusufiyah, south of Baghdad.

The military also announced four American soldiers were killed in separate combat operations Tuesday and Wednesday in Baghdad and Diyala province.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
