NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- USS Nassau (LHA 4) began upgrading its berthing Aug. 21 and is continuing to replace doors and lockers, resurface decks, and rewire the living spaces while in the British Aerospace Engineering (BAE) shipyard in Norfolk, Va.

“These upgrades are a long time coming,” said Combat Cargo Officer Chief Warrant Officer Joseph Lindsey. “It is time for new racks in that area, and I think it will be good for morale.”

Fifteen BAE shipyard personnel are working five to six days a week. In 10-hour shifts, the crews work day and night, and will total nearly 15,000 man-hours to have this job completed by the middle of December.

“The preservation greatly improves the lighting, appearance and habitability,” said Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class (AW/SS) William Bonneau. “The berthing is a better place to live for all concerned.”

All racks are being upgraded to cubicle style with all new lockers, television shelves, magazine racks, modified new lighting fixtures and mirrors.

“The new upgrades in the troop berthing look great,” said Capt. John E. Roberti, commanding officer of Nassau. “This is the fourth upgrade I have seen since I was here as air boss in 2000. The upgrade in the spaces and new furniture and fixtures are for quality of life, and racks will provide more privacy and comfort.”
