USS ANZIO, Persian Gulf (NNS) -- While conducting maritime security operations (MSO) off the coast of Pakistan, Nov. 13, the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68) provided medical assistance to a civilian vessel in the Persian Gulf.
After the motor vessel Al Shams, a 25-meter Pakistani-flagged dhow from Gwadar, Pakistan, failed to respond to bridge-to-bridge radio calls, an Anzio rescue and assistance (R&A) team was dispatched to the vessel to ensure the crew members’ safety.
The R&A team members greeted the crew with a crate of fresh fruit and water and offered assistance to the crew. As it turned out, one of the Al Shams crew members had an infected laceration on his foot that Anzio’s Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Brandin Huggett treated.
“If we hadn’t helped, he probably would have lost his foot in about two weeks or so,” said Huggett. After cleaning and dressing the infection, Huggett gave the Pakistani crew member additional dressings, band aids, and 14 days worth of antibiotic medicine.
Anzio, part of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Carrier Strike Group, departed Naval Station Norfolk, Oct. 3, for a deployment in support of MSO and entered the Commander, 5th Fleet area of operations, Oct. 30.
MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.
