PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (NNS) -- Members of the U.S. Army’s 40th Transportation Company completed field fuel exercises Nov. 9 with U.S. Navy personnel at Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Puget Sound Manchester Fuel Department.

Approximately 44 Soldiers from Fort Lewis, Wash., practiced fueling and convoy techniques, which they would apply if they were deployed at the fuel department near the city of Port Orchard. The 40th Transportation Company specializes in fuel, petroleum and lubricants transport, which they deliver to various locations in the field.

“This is an opportunity for the company to exercise their skills using their fuel trucks and tankers at our fueling stations,” said Lt. Allen Ledbetter, FISC operations logistics intern. “Manchester Fuel Department supports the Pacific Fleet in the Northwest area of operation, but we have provided fuel to all branches of the military throughout the region, as well as contributed to Coast Guard forces.”

“The purpose of this exercise is to train the Soldiers in transferring fuel and delivering bulk issues of fuel in other regions,” said Army Sgt. Corey Brown, 40th Company team leader. “With this training, we will be able to better support various missions if we are deployed.”

The training exercise began Oct. 23, but prior to practicing fuel transfers, the 40th Company received driver training. They practiced transporting fuel from various locations, which included a trip to Portland, Ore.

“It’s been a really good experience to have this training at Manchester,” said Army Staff Sgt. Deborah Crim, 40th Squad Leader. “We’ve gotten a lot support from FISC and we have supported them likewise. Overall, this was a good team building and joint exercise for both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.”
