SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- Three USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) Carrier Strike Group ships pulled into Sasebo, Japan, Nov. 6, on a port visit during the group’s regularly-schedule fall deployment.
About 6,000 Sailors are taking part in the port visit from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, Carrier Air Wing 5, guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67), and guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem (DDG 63).
While ashore, dozens of the Sailors have volunteered to take part in three different community relations projects around the Sasebo area. Sailors filled up all available spots for the projects.
Other Sailors are joining together to challenge local sports teams in soccer, basketball and softball games. Most Sailors, however, have simple plans for their off-duty time.
“I am looking forward to getting off the ship for some fresh air,” said Yeoman Seaman Jessica Gardner of the ship’s Executive Department. "I plan to have a nice dinner and do some Christmas shopping.”
The group’s ships, embarked strike group and destroyer squadron staffs operate from Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, and the air wing squadrons and staff are based at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan.
