US Helicopter Crashes in Iraq, Killing 2 Soldiers
06 November 2006
U.S. military officials in Baghdad say an American helicopter has crashed in northern Iraq, killing two soldiers on board.
A military statement says no enemy fire was observed when the helicopter went down in Salaheddin province Monday. An investigation into the crash is under way.
Earlier, the military reported another three American troops had been killed in combat in western Iraq's Anbar province. The three Americans - two Marines and one Army soldier - were fatally wounded during fighting Saturday and Sunday.
The latest deaths raise the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq this month to 18.
Elsewhere in Iraq, the U.S. military says coalition ground troops killed an insurgent with links to a senior al-Qaida in Iraq leader. The militant was killed Sunday in a coalition raid on a building near al-Yusifiyah, south of Baghdad.
In another coalition raid Sunday, the U.S. military says troops found a large cache of weapons and explosives in the northern town of Beiji.
A curfew remains in force in Baghdad to prevent outbreaks of violence following the death sentence handed down by an Iraqi court on Sunday to deposed leader Saddam Hussein.
The Iraqi government ordered an indefinite curfew on the capital and neighboring Diyala and Salaheddin provinces even before the Saddam verdict was announced Sunday. Baghdad's international airport remains closed today for the second consecutive day.
