BAE SYSTEMS ACHIEVES MAJOR MILESTONE FOR ASTUTE CLASS TRAINING SERVICE

02 Nov 2006

Portsmouth, United Kingdom. - BAE Systems has successfully demonstrated the first of the eight elements that comprise the Astute Class Training Service (ACTS) contract to the UK's Royal Navy, and it has been accepted as Ready For Training.

FAST, a joint venture company between BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte), L-3 and Flagship Training, which was set up in 2001, is managing a 30-year Private Finance Initiative contract for the UK Ministry of Defence, valued at approximately £490 million, to provide comprehensive training services for the first three Astute Class submarines for the Royal Navy. The development work is split between BAE Systems Insyte and L-3, with Flagship Training supplying the training design, the building and the instructors.

All of the training media for this first element of the Astute Class Training Service has been developed by Insyte using the 3D Virtual Reality tool VoRTEX, developed specifically for the ACTS requirement. VoRTEX allows each trainee to operate and/or maintain the equipment which is represented as a 3D spatial and behavioural model on a classroom PC under the guidance and control of an instructor. The ACTS contract now moves into the Operational Phase.

Paul Laity, BAE Systems Insyte programme director for naval, said: "The training programme and its supporting elements, which are being jointly developed by BAE Systems and L-3, will give the UK's Royal Navy a highly advanced and innovative training service for those operating, maintaining and serving on the Astute Class boats, matching the highly advanced capabilities of the submarines themselves."
