USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, At Sea (NNS) -- The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Carrier Strike Group (IKE CSG) entered the Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations, after transiting the Suez Canal Oct. 30, on a deployment in support of maritime security operations (MSO).

Commanded by Rear Adm. Allen G. Myers, commander, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 8, IKE CSG includes the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower with its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7, and embarked Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 28; the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68); guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage (DDG 61); guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87); and the fast-attack submarine USS Newport News (SSN 750), which are all homeported in Norfolk, Va.

“I’m extremely proud of the men and women of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group,” said Myers. “We’re looking forward to working closely together with our coalition and regional partners to strengthen our collective efforts to keep the seas free, safe and secure for trade and commerce, conducting maritime security operations and missions that support ground troops. We’re ready, and we’re here to make a difference. ”

During this deployment, IKE CSG is prepared to operate alongside coalition partners to conduct MSO under international maritime conventions to ensure security and safety in international waters so that all commercial shipping can operate freely while transiting the region.

MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material. MSO includes a full range of activities from assisting mariners in distress to visit, board, search and seizure operations to engaging regional and coalition navies.

U.S. 5th Fleet, headquartered in Manama, Bahrain, is responsible for an area encompassing about 2.5 million square miles of water including the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean.
