EVERETT, Wash. (NNS) -- The USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60) Main Propulsion (MP) Division of the Engineering Department replaced the inlet duct, “bell mouth,” on the Bravo engine Oct. 27.

The inlet duct is “a small part of an engine, which directs airflow into the compressor section of the engine,” said Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 1st Class James Vallely, leading petty officer of MP Division.

“When we conducted an inspection of the bell mouth, there was an indication of deterioration on the surface,” said Vallely. “As a result of the deterioration, an outside activity was brought in to remove the duct, powder coat it and install a new duct with the use of a crane.”

The removed inlet duct will be refurbished by Intermediate Maintenance Facility Det. Everett and kept there as a spare for the ship.

“It [the duct being removed] doesn’t happen very often,” said Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Electrical) 3rd Class Austin Fairman. “But, through natural wear and tear, it’s going to need to be replaced.”

Five Sailors helped with the evolution. Two Sailors were positioned on the second deck to guide the duct into the ship, and two were inside the ship to receive the equipment and set it into place. The fifth person acted as safety observer.

“We all work very well together,” said Fairman. “Everybody has something they are good at, and we utilize everyone’s skills to get the job done.”

For the next several weeks, MP division will conduct preventative maintenance in their spaces in preparation for a routine deployment.
