IAI's Elta Systems Group Awarded $80 Million Contract to Supply EL/M-2238 3-D STAR Surveillance and EL/M-2221 Fire Control Radars

Oct 26, 2006

EuroNaval 2006, Paris, France - Elta Systems Group, a subsidiary of Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), has been awarded an $80 million contract to provide its EL/M-2238 Three-Dimensional Surveillance, and Threat Alert (3-D STAR) and EL/M-2221 Search, Track and Guidance/Gunnery Radar (STGR) radars to upgrade an undisclosed customer’s frigates.

EL/M-2238 3D-STAR is an advanced three-dimensional multi-mode, multi-beam naval radar system. It uses two separate channels to enable instantaneous air and surface surveillance to deliver superior performance in air and surface target acquisition and threat alert. The radar also supports the operation of Anti-Air-Missile (AAM) weapon systems and surface gunnery engagements through a unique splash-spotting capability.

EL/M-2221 STGR is an advanced search, track and guidance/gunnery radar system. EL/M-2221 STGR uses a mono-pulse dual-band (X and Ka) pulse Doppler radar to quickly acquire and track targets. The radar is also capable of guiding missiles (such as IAI's Barak Point Defense Missile System) and directing guns against surface and air targets.

Israel Aircraft Industries is a recognized leader in the aerospace and defense industry and Israel’s largest industrial exporter. IAI's Elta Systems Group is one of Israel's leading defense electronics companies and a leader in Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) applications.
