ABOARD USS BOXER (NNS) -- USS Boxer (LHD 4) Expeditionary Strike Group (BOXESG) visited Singapore Oct. 12-16 for their first port visit since entering U.S. 7th Fleet on their way to the Persian Gulf.
The purpose of the port visit was to replenish supplies, perform minor repairs to the ship, and to provide Sailors and Marines aboard Boxer a break before continuing on with the deployment.
“This visit is a great chance for us to get out there and enjoy the local culture,” said Boxer Commanding Officer Capt. Bruce W. Nichols at an all-hands address to the ship before pulling in. “This is also a great opportunity for us to help build long-lasting friendships through our community relations projects.”
While in Singapore, BOXESG Sailors and Marines participated in community service projects, played in a sports tournament, experienced the local culture, and took tours provided by Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
“I really enjoyed helping with the community service project when we cleaned up a beach,” said Boxer Airman (AW) Maria Arteaga. “Experiencing their culture was great.”
For many Sailors and Marines, this was their first visit to Singapore.
“This was my first time seeing the area, so I really enjoyed it,” said Ship’s Serviceman 2nd Class (SW) Lovette Burris. “It was great to eat some good local cuisine and be able to relax.”
Boxer is the flagship for the Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group, operating out of San Diego, and is reporting operationally to Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 7/Task Force 76, the Navy’s only forward–deployed amphibious task force.
